Chemical properties Translucent white rhombic crystals or small pieces. The apparent density is 1.80 ~ 1.85 g/cm3. Soluble in water, slightly soluble in alcohol. At high temperature, it has strong reducibility and can make the color disappear, so it is called hanging white block. In case of acid decomposition, decomposition at 120ºC to produce formaldehyde, hydrogen sulfide and other toxic gases. Anhydrous hanging white pieces are stable, but will gradually break down in humid air. The aqueous solution begins to decompose above 60ºC, and the dilute solution decomposes much faster than the concentrated solution.

Sodium formaldehyde hyposulfate is an inorganic compound. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water. Sodium formaldehyde hyposulfate has certain oxidizing and reducing properties.

 
 
Sodium formaldehyde hyposulfite is stable at room temperature, but will decompose at high temperatures, humidity, or in contact with strong acids. It can be reduced to sodium sulfite and formaldehyde by oxidizing agents chloric acid and hydrogen peroxide. Sodium formaldehyde hyposulfite can also be oxidized to sulfonal by the oxidizing agent chlorine gas.
 
Sodium formaldehyde hyposulfite is reductive and can react with some oxidants such as chlorine or chloric acid to reduce to sodium sulfite and formaldehyde.
 
Sodium formaldehyde hyposulfate is often used as dehydrating agent and reducing agent in some organic synthesis reactions. It can reduce aldehydes or ketones to their corresponding alcohols. Sodium formaldehyde hyposulfite can also be used in the synthesis of dyes and dye intermediates.
