Cadmium, a heavy non-ferrous metal element, chemical symbol Cd, atomic number 48, discovered in 1817. The element is silver-white metal, which is an excellent metal that absorbs neutrons. It can be made into rods to slow down the chain fission reaction rate in nuclear reactors, and is quite useful in zinc-cadmium batteries. Its sulfide is brightly colored and is used to make cadmium yellow pigment.
The ratio of substances to cadmium in the earth's crust is 1,000,000:0.1~1,000,000:0.5. It is extracted as a by-product from zinc ore or cadmium sulfide ore and is mostly used to protect other metals from corrosion and rust, such as electroplated steel, iron products, copper, brass and other alloys. Another use is in the manufacture of a bright yellow pigment called cadmium yellow, which is used as a high-grade paint and painting pigment.
